Malapascua is a simple island, alone in the ocean, and far away from what the rest of us take for granted. One thing that cannot be found in the area is a book shop.
Filipino children are exposed to books in school but they never learn to associate books and reading with fun, self-discovery, and self-improvement.
Evolution, with the help of our diving community, is starting a Kid’s Book Club for the children of Malapascua and we are asking for your help. By bringing just one children’s book from our list to Malapascua you can help foster a love of reading in our local kids.
What can you do to help?
We already have a small seed library in place, but we are looking to expand the number of titles we can offer. So, we are asking our customers coming from places with better access to book shops to donate books to our project. As we need 16 copies of each book, we will ask for specific titles to be donated. Once we have reached 16 copies we will move ontothe next title.
Please contact us for our most up-to-date book requirements and if you can bring just ONE book from that list you may be able to help create a lifelong reader. And, if you plan to join us here on Malapascua, then why not see if we have a KBC session lined up and maybe you can share your enthusiasm for books with our kids here on the island!
How it works
Evolution has already secured 16 copies of 4 of the most popular children’s books in shops today. For each session 15 books will be assigned to children in a group with 2 kids sharing a book. The remaining book will be read aloud by our ‘Reader Leader’. The children will experience the joy of reading and will be invited to participate and interact where appropriate. As the island has many kids of all ages, the groups will rotate each month so all kids can handle and enjoy the books multiple times during the school year.
Our mission is to provide books for children to read, and be read to, in a fun and positive environment. We will conduct bi-monthly (or more, if popular!) reading programmes in the school led by a native or fluent English speaker with buckets of enthusiasm. We are not trying to improve or teach literacy, we are simply trying to allow children handle and experience fun, non-school books in the hope that this can sew the seeds of a future interest in independent reading. We also hope to teach parents that books and reading are a critical part of any child’s(or adult’s) personal development.
