kids book club evolution diving resort malaspascua

The Evolution Kids’ Book Club

Malapascua is a simple island, alone in the ocean, and far away from what the rest of us take for granted. One thing that cannot be found in the area is a book shop.

Filipino children are exposed to books in school but they never learn to associate books and reading with fun, self-discovery, and self-improvement.

Evolution, with the help of our diving community, is starting a Kid’s Book Club for the children of Malapascua and we are asking for your help. By bringing just one children’s book from our list to Malapascua you can help foster a love of reading in our local kids.

What can you do to help?

The popularity of this program has been excellent with both the kids and our guests, so we have quite a good library already. But we are still looking to expand the numbers of books to work with more kids, and to offer more variety of titles. So please see the lists below for our chosen titles and help us expand.

Please contact us for our most up-to-date book requirements and if you can bring just ONE book from that list you may be able to help create a lifelong reader. And, if you plan to join us here on Malapascua, then why not see if we have a KBC session lined up and maybe you can share your enthusiasm for books with our kids here on the island!

How it works

We will keep the library of books safe and sound at Evolution, and for each session bring the books which are then assigned to kids to share, ideally 2 kids per book. One copy of the book will be read aloud by our “Reader Leader”, with the kids being encouraged to follow along in their copy. The children will experience the joy of reading and will be invited to participate and interact where appropriate, with animal noise, and special character voices of course!

As the island has many kids of all ages, the groups will rotate each month so all kids can handle and enjoy the books multiple times during the school year. We are also giving out books as prizes to kids willing to stand up and read aloud themselves, or just for being particular enthusiastic during the session. The hope being that they take them home and enjoy them with their family to encourage more reading.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide books for children to read, and be read to, in a fun and positive environment. We will conduct bi-monthly (or more, if popular!) reading programmes in the school led by a native or fluent English speaker with buckets of enthusiasm. We are not trying to improve or teach literacy, we are simply trying to allow children handle and experience fun, non-school books in the hope that this can sew the seeds of a future interest in independent reading. We also hope to teach parents that books and reading are a critical part of any child’s(or adult’s) personal development.
