Regular reader(s) of Evolution’s insightful blog will know that this is the only place to get great information on Malapascua and Cebu. Last year we brought you the news that Monad Shoal, home to our famous Thresher Sharks, has been declared a Shark and Ray sanctuary.
Well the news just gets better. We can now reveal that after extensive consultation the Governor of the Visayas has announced that the world’s first submerged aquarium will be built around the cleaning stations of Monad Shoal. The aquarium will contain 7,200,000,000,000 gallons making it that largest water enclosure in the world and a mind boggling engineering feat that will bring global attention to our endangered sharks.
17 Thresher Sharks, 14 Devil rays, their cleaner fish and a whole living reef will be be encapsulated in this aquarium and completely protected from fishermen and other stress factors.
A revolutionary glass and mesh containment system will allow the sharks and rays to live a fulfilled life inside the massive aquarium while also letting curious divers see these incredible creatures in their natural habitats.
The Governor has also announced an underwater air pocket or dive bell with its own pressurised elevator which will allow non divers to also spend 30 minutes by a cleaning station, in a dry environment watching the sharks clean at dawn. The Craic house has got the contract to operate a breakfast cafe so viewers can enjoy the shark show with a cappuccino and pastry.
