Masks – Your First Piece of Kit

New divers often ask which piece of equipment they should buy first, and the answer tends to be “a mask”. Then begins the challenging task of finding a mask which fits your face well to ensure a comfortable, leak free dive. Usually after trying various masks and getting through a number of dives people find a mask they like and settle into it. If you dive a lot you often buy two of the same mask just in case you lose one, so you can avoid going back to some other mask which is not as comfortable and enjoyable to use.

So what makes a mask the right one for you? Well the only important factor really is the fit. If it doesn’t leak and feel comfortable on your face then that’s the make for you. It doesn’t matter if it’s the most expensive one or the cheapest one – it’s all about the fit. So when looking for a new mask the best idea is to be able to try and dive with the masks before you buy. Then you know if it’s the right one for you. At evolution we have a variety of masks in our rental section so you can try out different ones.

Some people prefer masks with a clear silicone skirt as they allow more light in, others prefer the black silicone as it doesn’t show dirt or give reflections. The choice is really up to you!

Don’t forget that when diving it is also important to look great… so you can choose a mask in your favorite color, or personalize it with an Evolution mask strap of various colours.

Whatever you do remember to have fun!!
