This weekend sees one of the biggest Fiestas in The Philippines take place in Cebu.
Sinulog is a huge celebration of cultural identity and of course religion. The fiestas take place all over the country and might be localised to a Purok, a Barangay, a Municipality or in this case a Province.
A Fiesta will see a huge movement of people and Cebu currently has hundreds of thousands of locals, tourists and Balikbayan (returned emigrants), clamouring in the street, meeting old friends and families and eating lechon. Lots and lots of lechon!
Here on Malapascua the locals will be celebrating with Beauty Pageants and parades but they save their main fervour for May of each year when the Malapascua Fiesta takes place. Like in Cebu today long lost sons and daughters return to the island from afar to celebrate.
In advance of any Fiesta the local Ukay Ukay vendors will move in to any area, peddling second hand clothes from around the world in anticipation of enhanced economics as people splash out.
