Who’s in Da House (Reef)?

Evolution’s beloved House Reef has long been a favourite of muck/macro enthusiasts, particularly those wielding cameras! An astonishing array of the weird and wonderful have long inhabited this deceptively ‘barren’ looking patch of Malapascua’s marine ecosystem. Over the years since Evolution’s Matt and David discovered this marine cornucopia our eagle-eyed guides have converted a multitude of divers to the wonders of muck diving.

Having taken substantial damage during Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda it did take some time for the regeneration of the various flora and fauna but it is once again in full swing! In the past weeks we have been focusing on giving nature a helping hand by introducing some structures to the reef.

First we deployed some bamboo marker poles on the perimeter. These poles not only mark the reef, but discourage fishing and make great current strength indicators when viewed from the restaurant! After this we worked on the reef itself, laying down some fairly interesting creations. The purpose of these structures is to create small ‘sub-ecosystems’ or ‘fish neighborhoods’ 🙂

As you can see by the pictures below, we tried to reuse left over materials from the resort, including of course the trusty toilets! As always Evolution puts recycling and the environment to the fore. The perfect home for eels, octopus and any number of shy critters! As well as these additions, of course the surrounding sea grass beds and sand patches play host to the usual cast of shrimps, crabs, sea moths, sea stars, dragonets and the list goes on! So if you are already a fan of the small and weird, or curious about the world of macro diving, be sure to pay a visit to our Evolutionary House Reef!!!
