blue ringed octopus malapascua philippines

The blue ringed octopus or (BRO) , is one of the most highly sought after underwater photography subject. Not only is it known for its lethal venom, but it is also stunning in its blue coloured patterns. As any other octopus they are cryptic creatures, blending in with their surroundings.

It’s imperative to swim slow since they don’t show the typical blue rings all the time, and they will stop and hide as soon they notice your presence.

They are active mostly during the day but possible to find during night dives at Bantigue and Lighthouse. During the day is more likely to find them at the Deep Slope and Chocolate Island.

Facts About the BRO:

  • Life span is about 2 years, the male dies after the couple mates, the female dies of starvation later after the eggs hatch.
  • There are about 10 different species on BRO.
  • The toxin called tetrodotoxin (muscular neurotoxin) produced by a bacteria in the salivary glands of the octopus, which is the same as produced by the puffer fish and cone shell.
  • The BRO also has a second toxin which is harmless to humans. This toxin is used to hunt crabs.
  • The diet consists of small crustaceans and shrimps.
  • On your next visit to Evolution just ask Gino, JoJo, Alex or Carlo to find you one, although that may take more than one dive…
