Every country around the globe has their national day, and it is celebrated accordingly. As followers of our blog know Ireland has St. Paddy’s Day, where people around the world converge on Irish pubs, including The Craic House. dressed in green & orange and consume copious amounts of Guinness and beef stews with potatoes. Yes we will be doing exactly that on March 17th complete with our famous Reggae band but more of that later! Americans celebrate their July the 4th with red, white & blue colourings with a hell of a lot of fireworks. Everyone has their own way of doing things.

Australia Day or colloquially known in Oz, with our slang, as Straya Day, is one of several proud occasions we celebrate in the land Down Under. Always on the 26th of January, it is a day of pride for lads & ladettes to don the green & gold or the national flag, and add further gear in red, white & blue, to relate to our flag (Editor’s note – isn’t this to pledge allegiance to HRM The Queen? Tsk Tsk, you won’t see that on Paddy’s Day).

BBQ’s are cleaned off, ‘eskies’ filled with cold beverages (read beers) and the humble cricket game is held on any surface possible. Either down at the beach, on the road in suburbia or the traditional backyard, where stumps are made from virtually anything – a bin, a cardboard box or even actual, real cricket stumps. A national sport being played by patriots on their National day!

This year will be no different for The Craic House’s favourite Aussie on the 26th, only thing being, it will be spent aboard. No matter where in the world, the 26th is the 26th – Straya day is Straya Day. The BBQ will be lit, beach cricket will be played, a game of two-up to be had later and other Aussie pleasantries performed. A touch of home in the middle of the Philippines..

If by chance you’ll be on Malapascua, or travelling to be here on the 26th, come and join us at The Craic House at Evolution @ 4pm. We’ll be throwing a few snags on the barbie, enjoying a few cold ones and celebrating all things antipodean with customers, divers, friends and family. Cricket whites optional.

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! … Oi! Oi! Oi!
