As divers there are so many things to learn about the ocean. First of all, how to behave on dives so we cause no damage to the aquatic life. When this is all done can we start with the more fun stuff! Be curious, go explore and learn about what you see under water.

So, here are a few fun facts about our friends in the water:

  • Clown fish and Sea Anemones have a symbiotic relationship.
    • The sea anemone will protect the clown fish by allowing the clown fish to use it as a home and that way hide from predators.
    • The anemone will sting every other fish that doesn’t belong in it.
    • The clownfish will also lure small fish down towards the anemone so that the anemone can eat.
  • Parrotfish can spend up to 90{3c584785206271acba0b48c760be4725f0625fa591b4a52f771ab721d5a102df} of the day eating algae off the corals. They will later on poop it right back out in the form of sand. They are the reason our beaches are so sandy. They can actually leave up to 200 pounds of sand a year!! At night the parrotfish will secrete a mucous cocoon around them, so their predators can’t sense them, and that way be safe during the night.
  • Both clown fish and parrot fish can change sex. Clown fish are born as male, and if a female dies the dominant male can change sex and become female. Most parrotfish are born as females, but later on in life they turn into males. No matter the sex they are born as, will they always have both sexes organs.
