Over the past few months Evolution has taken a lot of criticism about our internet speed. Last time we checked we are in the business of making scuba dreams come true and making sure people have great beach holidays. Internet is not our core business and we are subject to the vagaries of our wonderful location.
So, Point One – Malapascua is a remote island surrounded by vast oceans and has a limited population and therefore receives limited investment.
Point Two – The Philippines rates as 176th out of 202 countries on the world according to recent study with just 3.64 Mbps per second download speed. 3.64 Mbps per second?? We would do anything for such a mind bending speed as that!
Point Three – The Philippines has the second slowest internet connection in Asia with only Afghanistan ranking lower then us. Yep.
Point Four – a recent IT study here on the island has pinpointed the speed on Malapascua at 167kbs per second. So even the Taliban in the Bora Bora can watch Youtube online faster then us (we can’t actually watch Youtube at all).
Point Five – the Philippines is on average almost 4 times more expensive per 1mb then the global average so now it all really makes more sense. It IS more fun in the Philippines. You’re welcome!
So before taking a swipe at Evolution or anyone here on Malapascua consider the bigger picture and don’t plan those important Skype calls or mega uploads to Facebook while here! The Philippines is one of the great untapped destinations on planet earth and offers everything under the sun. Except great internet.
