Just started diving and thinking about buying some equipment? Or you don’t want to buy any equipment but you do a lot of diving? Why not make it all a bit safer by investing in two simple pieces of equipment for diving? Here are two small, easy to carry items that can make the difference in a real emergency.
DSMB
(delayed surface marker buoy):
The simple use of this piece of equipment is to shoot it up to mark that you are shallow or on a safety stop. By shooting up your DSMB, you signal the boat you want them to pick you up, and its very easy for them to locate you when you dont ascend next to the boat.
As well, if in a situation you get lost, its easy for the boat and other divers to find you again, since you are now more visible in the surface than without.
You can easily bring it with you on a dive, clip it on, or put it in the pocket of your BCD! Just watch the film Open Water . . . .
Dive computer
A dive computer is a very handy piece of equipment for any diver to have, which makes dive planing and dives much easier! Instead of bringing your recreational dive planner (RDP) and planning all your dives by hand, you can have an quick look at the dive computer and it will tell you how deep you can go for how long; Easy! It also helps you to figure out changes of max depth and time if you are diving repetitive dives, nitrox etc.
A computer can be bought very cheaply and still be good quality and you can also buy the more expensive models with more options.
Both of these pieces of equipment are necessary if you are going to split away from a dive guide and your group, or go diving with your buddy and no guide. Neither an SMB nor a dive computer take up much space in your suitcase when traveling around the world, but either could be the most important item you pack!
